THE Welsh Guards continue to prepare for their deployment to Afghanistan this year with a training exercise held in Thetford.
The training saw them revise and practice a number of military skills that they will require during their operational deployment. Although originally planned to include live-firing of the General Purpose Machine Gun as well, this part of the exercise had to be postponed due to the extremely windy conditions.
The Welsh Guards have been conducting months of training for their mission, covering a wide variety of subjects including language, cultural, military and conceptual skills. As their deployment gets ever closer, the intensity and complexity of this training has increased to ensure that the soldiers are absolutely ready for the challenges that lie ahead.
The Guardsmen now look forward to their next major training event, a two week long Mission Rehearsal Exercise next month. This will allow them the opportunity to put all of the skills that they have learned over the past few months into practice in a realistic and challenging environment, and ultimately prove that they are ready to deploy.
