On Sunday 30 September 2018, Guildford Borough Council held a service and dedication for a new Memorial that had been erected in the Castle grounds to those in the Services, from the Borough, who had lost their lives on operations since 1945.
Major Sean Birchall, who commanded IX Company on the Battalion’s 2009 OP HERRICK tour to Afghanistan, and who was Killed in Action on 19 June, was one of eighteen names on the new Memorial.
Members of the Birchall family were present, as were a party of serving and retired Welsh Guardsmen who served under Major Birchall on the tour. The morning consisted of a service in Holy Trinity Church in the centre of Guildford, followed by a Service of Dedication of the new Memorial in the Castle grounds ending with a reception in the Guildhall.
The Regiment would like to thank the Mayor and Council of Guildford Borough for a truly memorable morning and for doing what they have done to remember and honour those who gave their lives in the service of their country, including Major Sean Birchall.
