A unique dedication in memory of all Welsh Guardsmen that fought in Italy in 1944 has been created by the wine makers Palazzo Tronconi who have created a wine dedicated to all Welsh Guardsmen who lost their lives at Monte Grande Arce Italy in 1944.
The Palazzo Tronconi Sauvignon Blanc is dedicated to 2733448 Sgt William Doyle Welsh Guards who fell at the battle of Monte Grande in Arce on 27th May 1944 and is buried in a Commonwealth War Grave at Cassino War Cemetery.
The winemaker felt it would be a fitting tribute as the locals still have memories of swapping their wine for bread with Welsh Guardsmen and still to this day the people of the town of Arce have somber memories of the British soldiers who were destined to die on their land.
The winery also selected a British illustrator to depict this image and the label reads:
Our Sauvignon Blanc is dedicated To Sgt William Doyle of the Welsh Guards and all the British soldiers who fell at the battle of Monte Grande in Arce on May 1944.
To this day the people of our town in Arce have somber memories of the English soldiers trading bread for wine and who were destined to die on their land.’
The wine can be purchased direct from the producer online here or will soon be available for retail purchase in the UK here.
Interestingly Sgt William Doyle is mentioned three times in the book Welsh Guards at War by Major LF Ellis;
